The Ugly Side of Social Media
This past summer I tried to do away with Face Book. It was nice but frustrating. Some folks in the church only communicate through FB. People kept asking me when I was coming back. So after my experiment I returned. But I am using it more for communication and posting Star Wars photos these days. I don’t really want to log my every move. I prefer to send messages and announcements regarding church activities, etc. I don’t mind the occasional attempt at humor either.
But as I read the status line on FB I am growing increasingly sad. This is a political season and there are so many mean comments on FB from folks that I know are usually very nice. Folks just say what they think without considering that their friends might hold a different view. I don’t mind sharing one’s view but the harsh humor and remarks regarding the opposing political figures is really crass at times. I’ve read comments regarding the president that are racist and beyond disagreeing with policy. I really don’t care if my friends vote for the president or not but I don’t want to read some of the things I read.
Other comments shock me. The hatred toward Muslims is particularly strong. I’ve read jokes and humor that cross the line. I have read comments about revenge and killing from folks who quote Bible verses hours after stating that America should burn the Koran and such. I’m amazed that folks say such things.
There are those who also air personal laundry and issues on Face Book. I don’t always know what they are talking about but it is obvious they are upset about something. I get a weird feeling that I am listening in on a private conversation that is being shouting to millions.
I realize social media connects people. It has helped our ministry at church. I am able to stay in touch and get information out fast and I’ve seen the results of how it works.
But I also am saddened by how so many feel that if you put it on FB it’s OK with no consequences. I’m sad that no one seems to consider how their words might sound to others.
Maybe it’s just me but there is a ugly side to Social Media.
I’m sticking with posting Star Wars photos.
